Icon Meme!
It's been a while, hasn't it? I promise one day I will manage to make two posts without several months in between them. Anyway, meme time! Please forgive any incoherence on my part, I'm running on two hours of sleep.
1. Reply to this post with "CHEESECAKE", and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.
Mine were picked by
vangirl.

Ah, Junji Ito and early Saturday Night Live, two tastes that taste great together! This image comes from Ito's manga Gyo, a horror tale about fish with legs. Yeah. I hear it's much better than it sounds but I have yet to read it. The text comes from SNL's "Landshark" sketch. This icon cracked me up the first time I saw it, and it still makes me smile.

I just like the look of this icon. It reminds me of the old horror movies I used to watch with my grandmother before she passed away. In fact, according to the person who originally had this icon, it is from an old scary movie.

Pam is one of my favorite characters on True Blood. The actor has an amazing deadpan delivery of this line, which I would explain more but that might get into spoiler territory for the third season. I wish my speakers weren't broken so I could find a clip of her saying this line. The delivery pretty much makes the line, if that makes sense.

Speaking of spoilers, this icon in and of itself is a spoiler. XD Behold Daenerys Targaryen and one of her adopted dragon children from the season finale of Game of Thrones. It's a powerful moment, and one I had been looking forward to since the tv show began. It marks an important turn in Dany's development and was one of my favorite moments when I read the book. Plus, look at the cute little dragon trying to be fierce. Aw! This one was made for me by a friend.

I'm going to try avoiding going tealdeer on this icon. It's made from a panel of the late 80s comic book Suicide Squad. When I was in middle school, my cousin, sister and I used to buy old comics from the local used book store and SS was one of the titles we would pick up. Admitted, it was probably not the best comic for little kids to be reading. SS starred a group of supervillians sent on dangerous missions in exchange for their freedom and/or a shorter prison sentence. It had a high body count and was very dark compared to the Justice Leagues and X-Men comics we also read. In order to keep the criminals in line, a few heroes worked with the team as well. One of these was Bronze Tiger, a martial arts expert who first served as the team's second-in-command and later as its field leader. We all liked SS, but the store seemed to only get random issues so we had trouble following story lines. I do remember seeing the panel shown in the icon but I was unable to find all the issues leading up to it. Eventually the store stopped carrying comics and I forgot all about SS.
Despite this, I remained interested in comics. After starting college, I really didn't have the extra cash to buy them so I began to frequent Scans Daily to get my comic fix. One day, a poster started a series on Suicide Squad and my old love was reawakened. Even better, he ended up posting Bronze Tiger's storyline and I was finally able to put the image into context. You see, Bronze Tiger had at one point in his history before joining up with the squad been brainwashed by the League of Assassins, under whose control he did horrible things including training children to be killing machines. During this time, he wore a tiger mask to hide his identity/keep his friends from realizing who he was and saving him. He also started going by Bronze Tiger during this time. Once he was eventually rescued, he kept the name but abandoned the mask, seeing it as a symbol for all that he had done while under the assassins' control. He returned to being a hero, but his association with the squad, its less-than-moral members, and the often underhanded methods the squad used began to take its toll on him. He began to think that maybe he was just born to be a killer (this feeling was not helped by the fact that he had killed a burglar that had threatened his parents when he was ten years old). He began to distance himself from his girlfriend Vixen, another hero who ran with the squad, and became increasing vicious while on missions. To keep this explanation from getting even longer, he is able to work through those feelings thanks to Vixen, the team therapist (yep, they had one), and lots of soul-searching. At the end of the storyline, he burns his old mask.
Er, that got way too long, didn't it? Basically, this icon represents a character I love, a series I love, and an important moment for a character I love. Also, I think it's just a striking image.
